Seeking community creatively: one social worker’s journey

Posted on behalf of Bournemouth University

Tuesday 26 February 2019

Doors open at 6:30pm and the lecture will begin at 7pm.

Seeking community creatively: one social worker’s journey

Professor Lee-Ann Fenge will use a narrative approach to explore identity, belonging and connectivity to ‘place’ in an exploration of the meaning of community and family and their resonances across the life course. Her personal narrative—from childhood, through social work practice to present-day academic research—will illustrate how notions of  identity and connectivity remain central to her thinking and her outputs.

Discussion will include consideration of the role of ‘voice’ in research and the mechanisms that can ‘silence’ it.  Performative Social Science and participatory approaches to research leading to co-production will be considered. She will illustrate this by using excerpts from a number of projects that she has undertaken creatively, including film and poetic inquiry.

Professor Lee-Ann Fenge began her career as a social worker, before moving into academia over 20 years ago. She is Director of the Research Centre for Seldom Heard Voices and has been involved in a variety of projects linked to the use of participative methodologies with older people, youth, and the homeless specifically linked to social inclusion and the voice of underrepresented groups.

Museums and Digital Media Influencers

Posted on behalf of The Arts Development Company

What is it?

Digital Media Influencers are reaching audiences that traditional marketing avenues simply can’t keep up with. This is recognised in the commercial industries, shown by a rise in engaging Online Influencers to promote brands and products. Particularly, now tourism destinations around the world are inviting Travel bloggers alongside traditional magazine and newspaper journalists to promote their destinations.

Museums as cultural tourism hotspots, that are continuously looking for new audiences, specially visitors from outside of the local area, might want to consider to not only send Press Releases to newspapers, but also engaging with Social Media Influencers.

In collaboration with Poole Museum, this workshop is a discussion with an Award-Winning Travel Blogger, Emily Luxton. Emily will be sharing information and insight through the trend in travel blogging, what is interesting, what can museums do to be recognised, what not to do, what are travel influencers pet peeves, and many more.

What will you go away with?

Understanding of online trends, how to work with social media influencers and action to develop your museums online presence.

Who’s it for?

This workshop is for professionals working for museums based in Dorset, Bournemouth, and Poole only. If you are from a museum outside Dorset, please contact us to see how you can get involved.

Who is speaking?

Emily Luxton, a multiple award-winning UK travel blogger, born and bred in Dorset.

The main theme of Emily’s blog is her travel ethics, and how she explores the culture of a place, rather than, as she puts it, ticking off the “top ten” tourist attractions. Emily is interested in getting to know what makes the places she visits so unique, and her ‘deep style’ of travel has helped her to win Travel Blogger of the year four times in the past three years. Despite being a worldwide traveller, Emily also focuses her writing on local cultural gems around her, and helps to promote information for people wanting to learn more about their hometowns.

The session will be moderated by Jane Showell, Culture+ Programme Manager.

How to book

Spaces are limited. If you book and find that you are unable to attend, please cancel your ticket as soon as possible and at least 48 hours prior to the workshop. This allows us to release the booking to others that are on a waiting list.

This Culture+ workshop is hosted by Poole Museum specifically for museums practitioners based in Dorset. Culture+ is funded by Arts Council England and the European Regional Development Fund. It is providing support for the creative industry strand of the Dorset Growth Hub programme lead by WSX Enterprise.

Managing Headaches and Migraines Safely and Effectively

Posted on behalf of Dr. Joshua Smith (Doctor of Chiropractic)

The focus of this FREE workshop is to help and inform on and learn more about why this health challenge is affecting more and more people, including children. It is perhaps unsurprising when we consider the amount of technology we use and the postures we adopt.

The good news? Using the strategies we teach you in this seminar, you can find a longterm solution to avoid headaches in the future.

In this workshop we aim to teach you:

  • Understand WHY you or others have headaches, migraines or head-pain

  • Learn WHAT you can do to better manage and prevent headaches and/or migraines

  • How a clicking jaw or teeth grinding can be a worrying sign when it comes to headaches and migraines

  • 7 BIG mistakes people make when it comes to managing headaches and migraines

  • Discover 3 simple exercises that can PREVENT headaches and migraines

  • A different and effective approach to safely and effectively manage headaches and migraines

People who attend these workshops want to find ways to safely and effectively manage these problems without the need to rely on constantly popping pills to get through the day.

We at Life Balance Chiropractic Centre believe that your body can regulate itself when there is minimal external interference, and we believe all of us should be functioning at 100% through living a healthy expressive life. This workshop will help you understand how to minimise those outside stressors, so your body can function how it's supposed to - and you can feel how you're supposed to - GOOD!

Powerboat Driving Taster Session (Daytime)

Posted on behalf of Dorset Marine Training

This is a taster session for adults who haven't driven a boat before or who want to have a look at the harbour with no added pressure of a course.  Great introduction to being afloat.  If you wish to bring along an under 18 please contact us in advance of booking to ensure the boat in use that day is suitable (please note no unaccompanied under 18s).  You will be able to take the helm of the boat under the supervision of the Instructor and learn some basic controls or equally to sit and relax if you prefer.  We would anticipate being on the water for approximately two hours once paperwork has been completed and lifejackets fitted.

As these sessions are aimed at beginners they are very much subject to wind conditions to ensure the activity is enjoyable and relaxing and will be rearranged if necessary.  These taster session are aimed at encouraging people to take up boating under a controlled environment and are not fast adrenaline rides.  If you are looking for a fast RIB ride please instead contact one of the local operators for that trip.  These trips are usually booked by two people together and the ticket below reflects that.   If you prefer to book as an individual joining other students on the boat please contact us directly.

Depending on the weather, tides and the choice of the group we may head out the harbour to Studland or explore various routes around the harbour exploring the channels round the back of the islands.  Please note there is a speed limit within the harbour which we will abide by.  If you’d like to see something in particular please speak to us in advance to ensure the tide will make it possible.

Before booking:  Please be aware that powerboating does require a certain level of fitness.  Please check our website for further details on the boat used to ensure suitability.  If either person in the party are under 18 please contact us to discuss.

Before booking:  Please be aware that powerboating does require a certain level of fitness and there may be size constraints due to the seating arrangements.  Please check our website for further details on the boat used to ensure suitability.  If you wish to bring along an under 18 please contact us to discuss in advance of booking.

The Map of Mundi exhibition

Posted on behalf of Michelle Rumney

Since her previous exhibition here, which was full of pathways, maps and labyrinths, artist Michelle Rumney has been on quite a journey. Tracking the story of the medieval Welsh outlaw, William Cragh, who was hung in the year 1290, but who miraculously came back to life, the artist has been exploring St Thomas Way - a new heritage trail inspired by this story which threads from Swansea to Hereford.

As artist-in-residence for this medieval mystery, based at Hereford Cathedral with its infamous Mappa Mundi - the largest surviving map of the world of its kind - Michelle has created a new body of work reflecting medieval concepts of time and space. What could this 700-year old ‘miracle’ story have to teach or inspire us? Find out in this touring exhibition and accompanying workshops, led by the artist.
